THE Operation Christmas Child coordinator has announced she is to step down after bringing joy to disadvantaged children around Eastern Europe and Africa for 21 years.
Hilary McFall will leave the role she started in 1992 and in that time has organised the annual appeal which collects, organises and delivers thousands of shoeboxes filled with gifts destined for less fortunate children across Europe and Africa.
She has worked tirelessly every year at the Bowerhill HQ with a team of volunteers to ensure that children receive Christmas gifts that they otherwise would not receive. The charity’s depot at Hercules Way, where boxes are stored before being packed onto lorries, has also closed, with organisers now looking for an alternative location.
Hilary said, “It’s been a real privilege to help for so many years. I have met some fantastic people and to have the opportunity to help so many children and allow them to receive Christmas gifts is fantastic. I have been overwhelmed by the support in the community for the appeal which has continued to grow and receive support each year.
“I first got involved after I watched a video of children in Romania and thought I’d like to help, and haven’t really looked back. We must have sent well over a million boxes from Wiltshire now.
“I would like to thank everybody that has helped in any way. Everyone that has contributed has made it special and that goes to everyone from those who packed a box, loaded cartons, knitted hats, mittens or anything else. They have all contributed to bringing a smile to children who otherwise would have nothing.”
A coffee morning will be held to mark Hilary’s retirement at Melksham Baptist Church between 10.00am-noon on Saturday 1st February.
