MELKSHAM Rugby Club are to put their new coaching team to the test as they approach the new season.

It was announced in June that TV personality and professional coach, Chris Chudleigh, has been named as Melksham RFC’s new coach for the upcoming seasons. It was also announced that experienced coach, Chalky Meek, will join the Melksham Ladies’ head coach, Hannah Berrelly, to kick start the Ladies’ journey as they enter a league for the first time.

Both teams kick-off their season with a warm-up friendly as the Ladies play Devizes on Friday 16th August, kick-off 7pm and the men take on Frampton Cotteral on Saturday 17th August kick-off 3pm, both at home.

The men’s first league game is on Thursday 29th August against Devizes at 7pm followed by an away game to Corsham on Saturday 7th September at 3pm.

The team also welcome new sports therapist, Chloe Gerrish to the club.

She said, “I am a self-employed sports therapist and masseuse and run my business ‘CJG Sports Massage Therapy’ with five years’ experience in many different club settings and sports such as rugby, football and hockey and I have been lucky enough to work abroad in Barcelona and Antwerp and alongside Bath Rugby and Bristol Bears this year.

“I am currently studying sports rehabilitation at UWE in Bristol, graduating in 2020, and I am really excited to begin working at Melksham RFC where I would like to implement swift rehabilitation sessions on Monday evenings to include prehab, benefiting the club for the upcoming season.”

Training is every Monday and Thursday from 7pm, with all teams training together, men, women and teens.

For more information about joining Melksham Ladies contact Hannah on 07740 876453. For more information about joining Melksham RFC contact 07926 929858.

  • Framing company moves to bigger, brighter premises

Local framing company, Wiltshire Framing, has moved to new larger premises in the town centre.

They’ve moved from Bath Road to 7 Bank Street into the former stationery shop.

“The floods we had in 2024 really hit us hard and caused all sorts of problems with the property and there are no signs of getting them sorted out so the move was the best option” said owner Kevin Beadle. “And it’s worked out really well.

“It’s a much better spot for us up here. We’re right in the town centre with far more people walking past and the premises are bigger and so much better.”

Kevin started Wiltshire Framing 15 years ago after 30 years’ service in the Royal Air Force and specialises in bespoke picture framing including military and memorabilia, canvases and large format printing. They also offer a range of other services including passport and visa photos, photo restorations, transfer of video tapes and slides, photocopying, large format printing up to size A0 and a vast selection of standard sized frames off the shelf. Supporting Kevin in the shop is local artist Steve, bringing an artist’s flair to their work specialising in art and frame restoration.

  • 91-year-old trampolinist is ‘Champion Flipper’ for Pancake Day

A Melksham man who won two gold medals at a trampolining competition at the age of 91 has been named Aldi’s ‘Champion Flipper’ for Pancake Day.

Peter Quinney was invited by the supermarket chain to complete a 360-degree rotation on a six-foot-high trampoline while flipping pancakes. He completed a full somersault, reaching a height of seven feet, before sitting down to enjoy a lemon and sugar-coated pancake.

The challenge took place at Spire Heights Trampoline School, where Peter has been training and coaching for 20 years.

In honour of Peter’s accomplishments and to support his quest to raise money for charity, Aldi has donated funds to the Teenage Cancer Trust.

Peter said, “In all my 91 years, I’ve never received a request quite like this, but when Aldi asked me to be their ‘Champion Flipper’ this Pancake Day, I thought, why not? Flipping a pancake requires a precise combination of landing and skill, much like trampolining, so it feels like the perfect pairing.

  • Melksham local launches estate agency built on trust and personal service

Born and raised in Melksham, lifelong resident Hamza Uddin has launched his own estate agency with a simple aim – to deliver a more personal and effective way of buying and selling property.

Hamza is now operating as Hamza Uddin EXP – Your Local Property Expert, part of the EXP network, the largest estate agency network in the UK.

Through this partnership, Hamza can help clients not only in Melksham, but also across the country and even internationally.

“I’ve always believed in building relationships based on trust and communication,” he said. “Buying or selling a home is one of the biggest decisions people make and can be a really stressful time. That’s why I go above and beyond to make sure every client feels supported and guided through every step of the process. It’s about genuine care and delivering results.

“My aim is to make sure everything runs smoothly as possible and to handle any red flags along the way. Pricing the property is key, and I work hard to achieve, and often exceed the asking prices for my clients.”

  • Melksham woman sentenced for taking £56,000 from theatre

A woman from Melksham has been sentenced for defrauding a Devizes theatre out of £56,000.

Carol Rendell, who was a volunteer treasurer at the Wharf Theatre, transferred £56,441.70 from the theatre’s account to her and her husband’s accounts between 18th May 2019 and 5th February 2024, police said.

She was sentenced at Salisbury Crown Court on Friday 30th January to two years in prison, suspended for two years, and must complete up to 12 days of a Rehabilitation Activity Requirement.

A statement from the theatre, read in court, said the theft had caused “a considerable financial blow” and left them unable to make repairs or improvements without seeking further funding.

“Every penny is now being carefully considered and, instead of enhancing the building, we are forced to rebuild our reserve funds to ensure our survival,” the statement said.

  • Melksham residents invited to second community tree planting

A second community tree planting day is being held in Melksham this month.

The local community group Melksham Green Space is inviting residents to join them at Clackers Brook on Sunday 22nd February.

“Volunteers are welcome to help plant trees and shrubs and be part of establishing a new woodland and wildlife habitat in the heart of Melksham,” said Nigel Benham, Chair of Melksham Green Space.

“Join us at the Water Meadow Car Park at 10.30am; Bring your spade and wellies, everyone is welcome!”

This is the second tree planting event following the successful first one in November when over 400 trees were planted. The group are creating a new woodland which will stretch from Ruskin Avenue, near King George V Park, to the Eastern Bypass, transforming an area of open land into a thriving habitat for wildlife.

  • CCTV review finds system failing since installation

An independent review has found Melksham’s CCTV system has been failing since it was installed, with cameras regularly dropping offline, producing poor-quality images, recording audio without the public’s knowledge, and failing to record incidents.

The report was commissioned after CCTV footage was missing of a collision in which Melksham woman Cheryl Decarteret was killed last September.

The technical review, carried out by Smart Integrated Solutions, examined the town’s 77 CCTV cameras, which are managed by Melksham Town Council.

The report stated, “A brief analysis of the system identified it was slow to respond, with cameras dropping connection completely or not responding in a timely manner, creating glitchy, blurred, pixelated images. It was confirmed that this has been normal since the installation commenced and was completed in October 2024.

“The system is not actively monitored with system operation being limited to a reactive response, rather than actively monitoring public safety and providing real-time support to the authorities.”
