A MELKSHAM family will be running, walking and cycling a half marathon for charity next week in memory of their matriarch, Tina ‘Doris’ Fisher, who died last year.
The family are raising money for The Donkey Sanctuary, a charity that was close to Doris’ heart, and have set themselves a target of £1,000 – so far they have raised £350.
Doris’ daughter, Cheryl Scott, explains, “Sadly we lost our mum, wife, nanny to cancer in February 2020 within just a week of her diagnosis. Mum didn’t get time to make a bucket list or even make her last wish to go to the seaside one last time with us all.
“We were due to run the Chippenham Half in her memory last year but due to Covid it was cancelled. Sadly, it’s been cancelled again for this year to so we have decided to do our own.
“This way all the family can join in, be it walking, running or by bike, we will all be doing our bit.
“The names of those taking part are myself, Laura Cleaver, Tracey Fisher-Hervin, and Mike Cleaver – we will all be running. And Mike will be running in full breathing apparatus – an extra 20kg in weight!
“Then we have the cyclists Chris Fisher, along with Kirk Hervin, Lewis Scott (age 17), Charlie Fisher (14), Daisy Cleaver (16), Poppy Cleaver (14), Honey Cleaver (11), and we also have Joey Ledbury from in2sport running with us, as well as other friends joining us along parts of the route and support crew dotted about with water.
“Our mum, Doris, would think we were mad but she loved to support the Donkey Sanctuary, she adopted a donkey Jimmy there, which is why we chose it as our charity to support, especially during these tough times, more than ever funds are needed. Sadly mum never got to meet Jimmy because when they visited Sidmouth he was at another site.
“We have two sponsors who have kindly stepped in to help us out – B Smart Martial Arts are kindly organising and funding our t-shirts; and then we have In2Sport who will be providing a tent, water and fuel with staff support on the day.”
The family’s half marathon event is planned for Sunday 12th September, and they will be starting and finishing at a family home in Berryfield.
“Our route will incorporate the park and several pubs with our donation buckets on route,” said Cheryl.
