THE Bowerhill Bomber took to the fields around the sports pavilion on Sunday 22nd July all in aid of Melksham Carnival, where 200 runners ran either a 5k or 10k race.
The hot weather didn’t dry up the spirits of runners from across Wiltshire and beyond, as they tackled the route, full of surprising obstacles with the stiles being particularly challenging for runners.
The results of the 5k were: 1st male: Ross Wayne of Purbeck Runners, 1st female: Eloisa Townsend, 1st boy 11-16: Owen Lythell of Avon Valley Runners, 1st girl 11-16: Tegan Hoggs, 1st boy aged 10 & under: Dexter Townsend and 1st girl aged 10 & under: Alisia McEntegert.
The results of the 10k were: 1st male: Simon Gilbert of Devizes Running Club, 2nd male: Daniel Piper of Avon Valley Runners, 3rd male and first Melksham male: James Walters. 1st female: Hannah Jordan of Devizes Running Club, 2nd female and 1st Melksham female: Sherelyn Cowles and 3rd female: Jolene Farion.
Race organiser, Tracey Hyde of Redfish Events said, “It was really good and considering it was our first time in Melksham, it was amazing. Nearly 200 people raced, even though the weather was really hot.
“We were joined by a lot of teams in this event including the Forest Fitness team and members of Team Titans, who are running the length of the country soon. We’ve had some great feedback and are hopefully bringing the race back to Bowerhill in the winter months.
“We have a lot of our regular followers come over with us, which is great, with a lot of new faces including runners from Devizes, which are new to our events.
“The event was super-hot but cloudy which was good, otherwise we would have had to adapt the race to keep the runners safe, but there were plenty of happy faces around.
“Runners particularly enjoyed our new addition to this race; the sponge bath. One racer, Jolene, who finished third said that it saved her life! Runners were squeezing the sponges all over them after the race.
“All in all, it was a great day. Thank you to Asda for donating us bananas for the runners, Waitrose for the chocolate, Christie Miller for the water and to the farmers who moved their cows!
“Our next Redfish event is the Carnival Chase in Warminster on Sunday 2nd September, and entries are open now.”
