They’ve been in Union Street since 1932 and 85 years later it’s still traditional fish and chips that you’ll find on the menu at The Fisheries.
For 21 years, owners Dale and Louise Edney have been serving good old fashioned fish and chips, just as the shop did in 1932 when it first opened. The couple took over the shop from Dale’s parents who retired a few years ago.
“It’s incredible that the shop has been open for 85 years; there can’t be many businesses in the town that have remained the same since they opened,” they said.
“But we think the success of the shop is because we’ve never compromised on quality – we have regular customers who come from Corsham, Chippenham and Devizes because they enjoy our fish and chips so much.
“We’re a little off the beaten track in Union Street, so we can’t rely on passing trade. It means our fish and chips must be good or people wouldn’t keep on coming back!”
“Of course, things have been difficult; our costs have gone up, the price of potatoes and fish has increased quite a bit, but we would never replace our ingredients with cheaper options because it wouldn’t be the same.
“We aim to offer good old fashioned fish and chips, just as we have always done,” said Dale.
“We’re a pizza-and-kebab-free zone and will continue to be so!
“Everything is prepared on the premises – we cut our own fish, make our own fishcakes and cut up our own chips. And this pays off with the quality.
“And we use excellent products including very good potatoes, which although is more expensive, does give better fish and chips.
“It’s important to us to serve the best fish and chips for our customers and stay true to what we are; a traditional fish and chip shop!”
Louise added, “We would like to say a big thank you to all our customers who continue to support us and also to our staff for their hard work and support.”
