A COMMITTED group of knitters from Melksham have knitted over 500 poppies for a display that was used in the town’s remembrance commemorations.
Those from the Crazy About Knitting Club who meet every week at Meksham Baptist Church started making the poppies in March this year with the focus on the First World War Centenary events.
As well as knitting hundreds of poppies, the club also made a wreath which will be placed at the Melksham Baptist Church.
The materials for such a huge challenge was funded by a £500 donation from Melksham Area Board and cllr Pat Aves asked the group to support the centenary commemorations by knitting as many poppies as possible.
Cllr Pat Aves said, “It is wonderful what the group has achieved and it is for such a fantastic cause. The board is always happy to consider support for any other groups looking for funding regarding First World War-related projects. To have made so many poppies of such a high standard speaks volumes for those involved.”
Hilary McFall from the club said, “It’s been great to have been asked to do the poppies and everyone involved has got fully behind it and made so many. They are all different, with different legion branches.
“The club is a great place to not only create great items for worthy causes but is also a place where people can get together and enjoy each other’s company in a friendly environment.”
The poppies were placed on a board for the Remembrance Sunday commemorations and will now be moved to locations across the town for people to see.
The Crazy About Knitting Club meet every first Wednesday of the month at Melksham Baptist Church. Everyone is welcome.
