LOCAL woman, Tracey Freegard and her daughter Amy Freegard, recently took part in a charity parachute jump raising over £2,400 for the cancer support unit in the RUH.
Tracey who has terminal cancer, and Amy, wanted to raise as much money as possible for the unit so new equipment can be bought and much-needed decorating can be done. Tracey said, “It’s the small things that make the experience that little bit easier. A comfortable chair, nicely painted walls and bright pictures do help.”
The total raised so far is roughly £2,400 which both Tracey and Amy are thrilled with.
Tracey said, “We are incredibly pleased with the amount raised so far. We’ve been told now the unit should be able to buy a positron scanner which is fantastic news.
“The scanner is used to work out how widely cancer has spread throughout the body, so it’s a vital piece of equipment. At the moment, patients have to travel to Cheltenham or London to use the scanner, so by having one in Bath it will mean people with cancer won’t have to undertake such a long journey.
“It was a brilliant day and I’m so glad we did it. I only had one moment of nerves when we were just about to jump out of the plane and I thought, what am I doing? But as soon as we jumped, the nerves went away and I enjoyed every second.
“I did ache a bit the day after but not as much as I thought I would. I needed a day to recover but I feel fine now.
“The day was amazing and the jump itself was fantastic. Both of us loved every minute and would quite happily do it again.
“I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who donated, the response has been outstanding. A special thank you to Nic Clyde and Dot Gibbons who had a sponsor form in their shop, The Cobblers Bench. People’s generosity has been wonderful and we can’t thank them enough.”
