  • Region’s largest photography fair is back The South West’s largest camera and photography fair is returning this month to the Cheese and Grain. The Frome Wessex Camera and Photographic Fair will be held at the venue on Sunday 19th April, with over 30 stands selling all things camera and photography-related. Organisers say, “There will be cameras both digital and modern, collectable, lenses, filters, flashguns, film, paper, books and old prints. “If you’ve never been to a photographic camera fair, you’re missing a treat. The prices are low and you’ll find cameras, lenses and lots of other photographic accessories that you’ve been searching for. “Camera fairs are very friendly places and the stallholders will be pleased to give help and technical assistance on cameras and photographic equipment."   • Garage owner raises over £1,300 in half marathon A local garage owner has raised more than £1,300 for Dorothy House Hospice Care, a charity close to his heart, after running the Bath Half Marathon. Michael Barbieri, owner of Classic Motors in Melksham, completed the event on Sunday 15th March in one hour and 54 minutes. He raised £1,338 for the hospice that provided end-of-life care for his dad in 2017. The half marathon was a first for Michael, who said he had never really run before.   • Spas and churches at history group’s talk At a recent talk by Melksham’s history group, 92 people, including 26 visitors, listened to ‘A Tale of Two Spas.’ The talk was delivered by Simon Welch, who spoke about the history of Melksham and Holt spas. Paul Carter, Chair of the Melksham and District Historical Association, which organises the talks, said, “Some interesting theories as to why Melksham’s efforts at challenging Bath as a spa destination failed made for an interesting evening.” Members of the Association are due to visit St Anne’s Church, Bowden Hill, on 16th April. The talks will then return on Thursday 21st May, with a talk about St Michael’s Church from 7pm to 9.30pm, including a tombstone trail. Read more on our website, the link is in our bio.
  • Melksham News joins MPs in Parliament to discuss future of local news The future of local news was discussed in Parliament last month as Melksham News attended a national briefing on the growing crisis facing the sector. The event was hosted by the Public Interest News Foundation in partnership with the Media All-Party Parliamentary Group and brought together MPs from across the political spectrum, including Melksham MP Brian Mathew, to hear about the urgent need to support trusted local news. The briefing heard that increasing areas of the UK are being designated as ‘news deserts’, where no reliable local news provision is available. Joe McCann from the Melksham News said, “Across the country many local newspapers have closed, leaving communities without a trusted source of local news. “Local journalism plays an important role in promoting democracy and encouraging people to engage with what is happening in their communities."   • Residents invited to share views on waste and recycling services Wiltshire Council is asking residents to share their experiences to help shape future waste and recycling services, including plans to move to three-weekly household waste collections. The council’s survey will run until Friday 17th April, gathering feedback on current household waste and recycling habits, use of Household Recycling Centres (HRCs) and residents’ views on service changes, including the move to three-weekly general household waste collections, alongside new weekly food waste collections coming in 2027 and additional recycling options. The council says residents’ feedback will be used to shape future waste and recycling services, identify concerns and support needs during any service changes and improve communications.   • Bowls club starts new season with open day A bowls club in Melksham is hosting an Open Day on Saturday 18th April to mark the start of a new season. Everyone is welcome to the event at Spencer Melksham Bowls Club, Beanacre Road, whether you are new to bowls or returning to the sport. The day will run from 10.30am to 1pm. Club member Ann Hutchinson said, “Please come along and see what we have to offer, as well as enjoy coffee and cake. We have welcomed some new sponsors to support some of our projects for the season.” The club recently received a £125 cheque from Co-op Travel Melksham’s Community Projects Fund, which will be used to help with the purchase of a scorers’ and markers’ training kit.   • Have your say on proposed Melksham car park charges increase Residents are invited to have their say on proposed changes to car park charges in Melksham, including higher parking fees, longer chargeable hours, and new Sunday tariffs. Wiltshire Council is proposing the changes for all council-owned car parks, including those in Melksham. Plans include an average 20% rise in parking charges in 2026, followed by a further 5% increase in 2028, an extension of chargeable parking hours to 7am–7pm, and changes to Sunday parking charges to bring them in line with weekend rates. In Melksham, one-hour parking would increase from 30p–40p to 50p–60p per hour. All-day parking would rise from £6.00–£7.70 to £7.10–£9.10. Read more on our website, the link is in our bio.
  • Melksham Town Ladies set for historic League Cup Final appearance Melksham Town Ladies FC will compete in the League Cup Final this Sunday 12th April, their first appearance in a cup final in eight years. They will face Abbey Meads Ladies from Swindon at the Gerard Buxton Sports Ground in Royal Wootton Bassett (SN4 8DS) with a 2pm kick-off. “This final represents a huge milestone for the team and the wider women’s game in Melksham,” said Manager Adam Mulliss. “This is a massive moment for the team, and your support can make all the difference. Come along, get behind the girls, and help create an atmosphere they deserve. Get yourselves down next Sunday and be part of something special! “We’ve had a really strong run to the final, picking up impressive victories over Westbury, Chippenham and Keynsham along the way.   • Bath Operatic Group, Live at Shaw A concert celebrating well-known musical theatre is set to take place in Shaw later this month. The second ‘Live at Shaw’ event will be held at Christ Church, Shaw, on Friday 17th April, starting at 7.30pm and will feature the Bath Operatic Group presenting an “A-Z of musicals”. The group dates back to 1948 when the Oldfield Park Rangers Company presented a performance of Hiawatha, followed by HMS Pinafore the next year. In 1951 men were allowed to join and the name was changed to The Bath Youth Operatic Group. After putting on five performances including The Pirates of Penzance, The Mikado and Patience, the group moved to The Palace Theatre. In 1956 they moved to their final home The Theatre Royal Bath, where they produce a large musical each Autumn, and changed to the present name The Bath Light Operatic Group.
