MELKSHAM Walking Football Club (MWFC) hosted the first Mixed Walking Football Tournament to be held in the South West, on Saturday 16th March.
Held at Wiltshire FA HQ, at Green Lane, Devizes, the event comprised seven teams, three from Melksham, two from Chippenham and two from Bracknell, formed of men over 50 and ladies over 40 years of age, to play together at a competitive level.
“While mixed events are new to the walking football arena, MWFC have been offering mixed recreational and competitive sessions for three years and the development of a mixed tournament was an obvious progression,” explained club chairman Russell Hillier.
“Each team played each other once, with the top four teams progressing to the semi-finals. All teams performed strongly, with no team overwhelming any other, with the qualifying four teams being: Melksham Blue v Chippenham Blue and Bracknell Red v Bracknell Blue.
“Following a draw and an immense 22 penalties, Melksham Blues progressed to play Bracknell Red in the final, which also ended in a draw and after penalties, Melksham Blues secured the winners trophies.
“MWFC would like to thank the referees Paul Wiglesworth, Keith Davis and Kevin Lambert and all the competing teams.”
