A Melksham girl has raised £1,200 for charity in support of her sister, who was diagnosed with a rare metabolic condition shortly after birth.
Seven-year-old Harper wanted to raise awareness and vital funds to help support her sister Imogen, who has Phenylketonuria (PKU), a rare disorder that affects how the body processes protein.
Harper has been swimming with Puddle Ducks at Stonar School since the age of three and decided to use her passion for swimming to make a difference.
Working closely with the Puddle Ducks team, she helped create a fun, sponsored lesson plan that encouraged her fellow swimmers to join in. The sessions took place during the final week of term and included challenges and activities that let the children to showcase their skills, all while raising vital funds for the National Society for Phenylketonuria (NSPKU).
With the support of her swim school friends, teachers and her family, Harper’s initiative has raised £1,200 for the charity, which helps those living with the rare condition.
Harper and Imogen’s mum, Jodie, said, “Imogen was diagnosed with PKU at just 10 days old. She started treatment immediately due to high levels of phenylalanine in her blood. Managing PKU involves a strict, low-protein diet and daily supplements to help her grow and develop healthily.
“It’s a condition that requires ongoing support, testing and care. We are so proud of Harper for being such a loving sister and doing something so meaningful. We’re also incredibly grateful to Puddle Ducks for supporting her idea and helping make it a reality.”
The Regional Manager of Puddle Ducks Bristol and Bath, Diana Heathcote, said, “We are incredibly proud of Harper, from her early days learning to swim to becoming confident and capable in the water. Her compassion, initiative and dedication are qualities to be celebrated.
“We are pleased to support her and her family and hope this story encourages greater awareness of PKU and the importance of community-driven efforts like this one.”
