Melksham Lions say that this time last year they were looking forward and making plans for 2020.
President Jim Whyborn said, “ Well, we all know how that went, but that didn’t stop Melksham Lions doing what we do best.
“As with many other organisations we could not get out and fundraise or attend the many functions and events we usually see you all at. Our meeting place had to close but with the technology of Zoom, email and phone calls we could still help and support those who needed us most providing bags of essentials for those in temporary accommodation, the bags made from recycled material by volunteers of Deans Quilters, thus cutting down on plastic. We also made various donations and supplied household goods and distributed message in a bottles to some residents. We got our Easter eggs out before lockdown and raised £800 for Air Ambulance and Freewheelers.
“With fetes, carnival, party in the park and our own charter celebration lunch cancelled we wondered about Christmas. Could we go around the streets with Santa and be at the supermarkets? After much discussion with the Lions H.Q. it seemed we could not and one by one the shops cancelled.
“How were the children of Melksham to see Santa? We asked if we could bring Santa to primary schools and the six schools in Melksham and Shaw enthusiastically agreed in what proved to be a very successful and busy week with Santa and elves and one naughty elf that kept hiding, meeting about 2000 children!
“We must thank Alex and Paul of Event Technical Group for the fantastic lights and sounds installation on the float, it was very much appreciated.
“Christmas is usually our main fundraiser but this year we felt that the children were more important. You can still donate to us by visiting our website or just text Melkshamlions3 to 70085 to donate £3.00 plus the cost of your call. I can assure you that every penny we raise goes to charity. Our admin costs are met by our monthly subs.
“As we zoom into 2021 we would very much like to welcome new members, if you are new to Melksham it’s a great way to make new friends, get involved with what goes on in your town, have some fun and give a little bit back. You can find out more on our website, Facebook page or ring 0345 8337401.
“Enjoy your new year, I’m sure things will improve and hopefully we will be out and about again soon.”
