STUDENTS at Melksham Oak School have a new opportunity to expand out of the classroom, as a new wall has been built to showcase their artwork.
The six by twelve foot wall was unveiled earlier this month, following weeks of building work and decoration over the summer.
Art teacher Sam Butter was in charge of the project from start to finish.
Sam said, “I have been overwhelmed by the generosity of the community, giving up time, materials and skills to help our students flourish. Not only do we have this fantastic canvas to work on, our students can benefit from working alongside local artists to produce fabulous artwork.
“A big thank you to everyone who was involved with this project.”
Sam’s vision for the wall is that it will be ever evolving, and that students at the school will team up with local artists to repaint it three times a year.
She continued, “The best part of the wall is that it can be just painted over when restarted. Watch this space for the next community artwork on the wall!”
The free-standing wall was built by volunteers and students Cameron Macinnes and Kyle Townsend-Clarke, with the help of local and national businesses. It was then painted to the theme ‘Make mighty things happen’ by ex-student Sophie Haynes, and Richard Salter, finalist in the BBC’s Big Painting Challenge.
If any local artist or designer would like to be involved with future projects using the art wall, they can contact Sam Butter at Melksham Oak Community School via 729700.
Sam extends her special thanks to Pete Lythell of SSE, James Mulhall, Malcom of 1st Choice Skip Hire, Southern and Scottish Energy, B&S Construction, Leigh Stevenson, Wayne Bailey, Travis Perkins, Denmans Electrical Wholesalers and Wickes.
