THE return this year of Britain’s biggest Christmas lights display in Longford Road and the amazing town’s display have left a festive glow in the town.
It seems Melksham is the place to be for the best Christmas lights displays as the town’s lights have once again been described as “the best for miles around” and Alex Goodhind’s famous home display on Longford Road has been declared the biggest in Britain as he turned on his display of 200,000 Christmas lights last week.
Alex’s display has returned this year after a two-year break and is bigger and better than ever. It has been featured in national newspapers and on TV. Crowds gathered to catch a glimpse of the Longford Road lights with many sharing their amazement. Dan Stuchbury said, “An incredible display, that seems to get bigger every year!”
Alex first started his huge annual festive display almost 20 years ago and has raised thousands of pounds for Dorothy House in that time. He is once again collecting for the charity this year.
Days after Alex’s switch-on, the town welcomed the official turning on of Melksham’s Christmas lights display as huge crowds descended on the Market Place for the big switch-on. They weren’t disappointed as many have marvelled at the quality of the lights. Many are saying this year’s is the best yet and the team of volunteers who organise and put up the lights have been praised for their efforts.
Leila Riley said, “Thank-you for a fabulous event! The lights are the best yet,” while Kylie Bewley said, “I want to say to Paul Weymouth and his team…Wow! What a fantastic job u did!.” An anonymous post on Facebook summed up many of the comments saying, “I think and hope you all agree what a fantastic lights display has been provided by the kind hearted, hard working volunteers! You have done Melksham proud and a huge thank you to all the volunteers. And thanks to all those that turned out to watch the switch on. An amazing evening….this is what makes Melksham so special.”
