The Melksham family, who died aboard the Titanic, are being remembered throughout April with a display at the town’s pop-up museum in the town hall.
In April 1912, the Goodwin family, from Melksham, had planned to emigrate to Canada aboard the Titanic.
Traces of the family were lost when the ship sank after striking an iceberg, except for the youngest child, Stanley, who was only recently identified through DNA testing.
Stanley’s story is featured in the book Titanic’s Unknown Child by Carol Goodwin, the great-niece of Frederick Goodwin, father of the Goodwin family. The book is available at the Tourist Information Centre.
There is also a memorial to the family at St Michael’s Church.
Their story is featured on the Melksham and District Historical Association’s YouTube channel, titled Melksham’s Dramatic Loss of Life, which can be viewed at: https://youtu.be/253kpyebFXQ
