A Melksham author has released her debut novel, highlighting themes including disability and mental health.
Judetta Whyte, who has lived in Melksham since 2005, recently released Perpetual Limitations, a story challenging perceptions of disability, identity and inner strength.
“The book follows Samira, a young woman living with physical impairments, as she transcends not only her bodily constraints but also the spiritual, emotional and societal barriers imposed upon her,” said Judetta. “Guided by the enigmatic Sage and accompanied by Florence, Samira embarks on a transformative quest, one that begins as a personal struggle and evolves into a profound confrontation with fate, cruelty, and the fragile hope of humanity.”
Judetta, who took three months to write Perpetual Limitations, is a law graduate from Durham University and is currently studying to be a civil rights barrister. She added, “I first started drafting ideas for Perpetual Limitations by thinking about the power of free will and faith, and the opportunities these offer to create new possibilities. I realised there is not much literature about marginalised people, particularly individuals with disabilities, so I wanted to create a story that amplifies their struggles and experiences. I also compare their experiences with those of able-bodied citizens to show that suffering is a universal part of being human.
“Samira represents my teenage self and her journey towards accepting the outside world while fitting in despite being ‘different’ reflects my own struggles with identity and self-acceptance. I wanted to explore human vulnerability and spiritual growth, and hope is a predominant theme throughout the novel. All of the characters lose and gain hope in one way or another, and I believe viewing hope as a universal attribute is necessary for promoting justice and compassion in our lives.”
Judetta plans to continue writing but said she will wait until she is inspired. “I feel as though I have written everything I needed to on this topic in this novel.”
Perpetual Limitations, published by Pegasus Publishers, is available at Waterstones, Amazon, and locally at Devizes Books and The Corsham Bookshop.
