AFC Melksham disabled football team were crowned champions of two separate competitions at an event held in Swindon.
The club attended a tournament held at Swindon Futsal Arena which attracted teams from Bournemouth, Highworth, Swindon, Tidworth and Chippenham. The tournament is part of a series of five Ability Counts Tournaments held at different locations and AFC Melksham entered both the adult and under 16 categories – winning both!
The disabled team train every week at Melksham Oak indoor gym between 5-6pm on Wednesdays under the management of Taff Evans with coaches Gareth Evans and Pat Johnstone. All disabled are welcome to the sessions.
Mike Rogers from AFC Melksham said, “The fantastic results are backed up by some great team spirit and hard work. This was rewarded as both teams were undefeated throughout the tournament and were worthy winners.
“The team have a travelling support of parents and relatives who are almost an extra player for the team.”
• AFC Melksham’s senior adult team is also flying the flag for the town as they have got as far as the Wiltshire Cup quarter finals and going one better being in the semi-finals of the Eric Hughes Cup.
The management team of Mike Rogers and Taff Evans have lots to be proud of and much to look forward to as they will also move into their new pavilion at Bowerhill in April. It is turning out to be an excellent period in the club’s 12 year history.
