LOCAL motorbike racer, Darrell Higgins, was in action in the first round of the GP Originals Championship held at Snetterton, Norwich, on 4th and 5th May.
After qualifying, Darrell – on his Dennis Trollope-backed TZ 350cc Yamaha – was fifth fastest overall but fastest in the GP Masters class in a time of two minutes, 24.60 seconds and a speed of 73.01 MPH.
During his first race, he was in a great three-way dice with fellow competitors Roy Chapman and Nick Williamson, also on TZ 350cc Yamahas. Darrell had been up in third place but in the closing stages, he ran onto the grass, which saw Nick Williamson cross the line in third place and Darrell settle for fourth place.
These three also had great wheel-to-wheel dice in their second race and each of them took turns leading. Nick Williamson went one better and finished in second place. Darrell took the final step of the podium in third place but was only 0.18 of a second behind Nick Williamson but ahead of former Masters Champion Roy Chapman who had to settle for fourth place.
Darrell notched up a pair of fifth places in his next two races. Afterwards, Darrell said that he was pleased with these results as it was his first time at Snetterton since they changed the circuit layout and his plan was always to score some points and is looking forward to stronger finishes at the remaining circuits.
