MELKSHAM’S ‘Charity Morphman’, Robbie Newton, has conquered his ‘Back Garden RideLondon’ challenge, cycling 100 miles on a static exercise bike in less than six hours.
The cycling challenge is the second charity fundraiser organised by Robbie, who this year was planning to take part in the London Classics – the London Marathon, RideLondon and Swim Serpentine – which were postponed to next year due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Robbie’s ‘Back Garden RideLondon’ challenge has raised £700 for Macmillan Cancer Support, which will be added to the £1,787 that was raised by his ‘Back Garden London Marathon’ in April.
Robbie told Melksham News, “I wasn’t sure how successful the ‘Back Garden RideLondon’ was going to be as people were very generous back in April, but we still managed to raise £700 thanks to the generosity of friends and family. Special mention to Gooding Accounts for sponsoring the event too.
“The event went well and I completed the 100 miles in 5 hours, 51 minutes and 43 seconds. I couldn’t have done it without the support of my partner Kat who was there offering support and refreshments.
“Which leaves the replacement of Swim Serpentine. I have not been able to do any swimming training at all, but I would still like to do something in its place, so I am currently having a think about what I can do instead, watch this space!”
Thanking his supporters, Robbie said, “You guys are amazing! Especially with what’s going on in the world right now, you have once again supported my charity endeavours to do what I can for Macmillan Cancer Support. Thank you all so much for the fantastic support and sponsorship! Not going to lie, it was pretty painful, but your good wishes got me through.”
