New councillor, Jennie Westbrook, has been elected to Melksham Town Council following a by-election held on 13th July.
The by-election took place following the resignation of Louisa Lewis in April. Liberal Democrat candidate, Jennie Westbrook received 73% of the vote share over fellow independent candidates Ryan Clarke and Geoff Mitcham.
Cllr Westbrook said, “I would like to thank every single person who came out to vote on the 13th July; whether you voted for me or not I intend to be a dedicated representative for Melksham East.
“Throughout my campaign I have heard time and time again about the issues that the people of Melksham East are experiencing. From this I launched my Five to Thrive Campaign and I fully intend to make strides towards tackling these issues.
“The issues are those surrounding the council itself. I think it’s no secret that the Town Council has not been performing as a cohesive council. I want to get a better understanding of the issues that the council is facing, and see if we can find a pathway towards working cooperatively, with councillors and officers working together.
“I am fully aware that this is not going to be an easy task, but I believe that sometimes a fresh pair of eyes on a situation can guide you through a storm, which other might be struggling to see a way out of.
“I will use the experience of my Lib Dem council colleagues to look for external funding to make sure that the projects that the Town Council wishes to pursue get the greatest chance of success.
I will be seeking meetings with council offers to explain the exact state of where we are with the Melksham East Community Centre, so I can look at how we can move this project forward. I have the greatest respect for councillors who work hard, regardless of political party, and have every intention of working closely with Mike Sankey (County Councillor) to make sure our plans for the area are successful. This includes the opening of the spa roundabout and the speeding issues, which have been raised many times with me whilst knocking on doors.
“I raised in my Five to Thrive both infrastructure and the closure of Cooper Tires; these along with Melksham Assembly Hall are longstanding issues with no easy resolution. My commitment to the people of Melksham East is to keep in regular contact with you on all and to be your voice when consultations arise. I intend to put out a regular newsletter and would encourage you to follow my page on social media to see these updates.
“Finally, I am your town councillor; as councillors we work for you and whilst this role may be voluntary I do not undertake it lightly. I know the commitment it takes to be your representative and I would encourage you to please get in contact if you have any issues, concerns or comments. Once again thank you for putting your trust in me, I look forward to the challenges ahead.”
From a possible 3819, 505 electorates voted in the election, a 13.22% turnout. 4 ballot papers were rejected. The final results were: Ryan Clarke (Independent) 68; Geoff Mitcham 66; Jennie Westbrook (Liberal Democrat) 367 – elected.
