A LOCAL man is preparing for a 160ft bungee jump over Bristol harbourside to raise money to help repair the spire of Christ Church in Shaw.
Inspired by the news that the church is at risk of closure if money can’t be found to replace the 112-year-old oak shingles on the spire of the church, boxer Liam Richards will be making the big leap on Sunday 8th October.
Liam, also known as Rocco, said, “I read the article saying the church is at risk of closing due to the cost of health and safety repairs to the spire.
“This is the church where my sisters got married, my children were Christened, where I was told to clean after being caught throwing stones in Year 3, but more importantly I performed here as a king at my school reception nativity. So there’s lots of history for me, but for others it’s such a beautiful building to just visit and it would be a massive shame to see it close.
“I wanted to do something that hopefully grabs people’s attention and help raise some money for a much-needed cause. I’ve taken part in sponsored runs in the past, even though I’m not a big fan of running. But after this jump, I reckon I will chose running over jumping off a 160ft crane again – a far less dangerous option!
“I’ve never done a bungee jump before and don’t plan on doing it again, it’s not what I’d call fun. Those who know me will tell you I’m a very quiet, reserved person.
“The closer it gets, the more I’m starting to think about it, which makes me feel quite uneasy. I think on the day I will have to put on a brave face and let out the tears when I’m up there.
“My friends are overjoyed with me doing the jump, I think they can’t wait to see me flung from 160ft, my family are very proud but do wish I’d chosen something else like a sponsored silence!”
Liam has set himself the target of raising £1,000. To support him and help save Shaw Church, visit his Just Giving page:
