WILTSHIRE Council is deciding on the future of the ‘eyesore’ in the King George V Playing Fields after members of the public highlighted its ugly appearance through Melksham News.
Having had the issue raised, a Wiltshire Council spokesperson said, “We are currently exploring options for this building which could ultimately decide whether it is required. However, at this stage no final decisions have been made.”
Another resident, Caspar Hull, got in touch with Melksham News to express his annoyance with the building.
He said, “I read with interest the problem that Mr Rob Menghini highlights with the ‘council shed’ in the playing fields. I agree with his sentiment and wish for it to be eradicated from the face of the earth.
“This is an eyesore, it blocks my view of the cricket and the sunset in the winter when I wash up and look at the generations of parents during the day do the school runs and the evening congregations who meet. The contractors, English Landscapes nor Balfour Beaty, won’t leave any kit in there because it would be nicked, twice in the past 10 years. So knock it down?
“But it is full of asbestos from the prefab and post-war years. It was scarey enough when they reroofed and removed the old asbestos corrugated sheets.
“Can the council warrant demolishing the building with all the health and safety costs? Can they tart it up? Why waste money to tart it up? In my years as chair in the playing fields redevelopment, knock it down was the polite sentiment from the public consultation.”
