PLANS are moving forward to open the pavilion in King George V playing field as a café.
After appealing for expressions of interest for interested parties to take over what will be called ‘The Cricketers Café,’the town council received four ‘very good applications’. It is hoped that the new café will be operating by the summer.
Town council staff will now draw up a tender, specifying exactly what they expect for the new café, and will invite the four interested parties to put foward a quote and a business plan.
Speaking at last month’s King George V sub-committee meeting, Melksham Town Council’s town clerk, Linda Roberts, explained that the vision for the new café is that it will be a place where “healthy and wholesome food” is served.
It was also highlighted that a lot of work is needed to update the facilities at the pavilion and bring the kitchen up to the standard of being a “catering style kitchen” – works that will be done at the expense of the successful leasee.
Whilst work is being carried, the new café operator will be encouraged to bring in a mobile unit at the weekends, to offer food and refreshments to park visitors.
“This will be a goldmine for King George,” said Linda, “it will be an attraction for people that go there.”
