MELKSHAM Town Council’s clerk, Linda Roberts, has shared her thoughts and advice about what it takes to be a town councillor.
With local elections coming up in May – for town, parish and unitary roles – the town clerk is encouraging residents to think about whether they would like to volunteer for the community.
Speaking to Melksham News, the town clerk explains what she thinks makes an effective councillor.
What do you think makes an effective councillor?
“Be able to represent local views and priorities, someone who will build strong relationships and encourage local people to make their views known and engage with you and the council. Good communication and engagement are central to being an effective councillor.
“Someone who is passionate about the community in which they live or work and prepared to work amongst the community and has the drive to represent the needs of the community and vocalise them.
“Someone with vision and tenacity who is happy that the only reward is to see services and facilities delivered and the pleasure of seeing the community benefit in those services.
“Someone who is prepared to listen to other views especially if they are different to one’s own.”
What words of advice would you have to anyone considering standing for council?
“Don’t try and change the world overnight. Attend any training which is offered, it will equip you with the knowledge and tools to serve your community fully.
“Politics at this local level has no place. Leave national policy to Westminster, be concerned about what Melksham needs to thrive.”
Any words of warning?
“Work with the officers, they are there to support and assist you in your role as a community representative. They have experience, training, and knowledge about local government rules to guide you.
“Don’t get frustrated about policies and procedures, they are there to protect you. Don’t over promise, over deliver.”
For anyone considering running – what are their next steps?
“Tell the community why you want to represent them.”
Tell us about your experience as a town clerk.
“The last 23 years have been rewarding and challenging. Back in 1998 I thought I was applying for a simple administration role. How wrong was I?
“There is much more to being a Town Clerk than that. It is a way of life not a 9-5 job. I have had the pleasure of working alongside dedicated committed councillors during my time and have delivered some amazing community projects, facilities, and events.
“It has been a privilege to be part of the local government world empowering our communities.”
