Podium finishes for village racer

Travis Vince in racing action by Paul Korkus.

BROUGHTON Gifford-based racer, Travis Vince, notched up three podium finishes over the weekend of 23rd and 24th April.

Travis Vince in racing action by Paul Korkus.

Paul Korkus reports, “Travis competed in the ACU 250cc National and NG Cup championship races at Brands Hatch on his TZ 250cc Yamaha. Despite missing the first round of the championship at Oulton Park after a practice spill, he was eighth fastest and fourth in the NG Cup class at Brands Hatch.

“He made a good start and finished his first race in seventh place overall and third in the NG Cup class.

“During his second race he was locked in a great wheel-to-wheel dice with Ian Perks on his Honda RS 250cc machine for the NG Cup victory and they were joined by James Seath also on a Honda RS 250 machine in an exciting three-way dice.

“Travis crossed the line in sixth place overall and second in the NG Cup class behind Ian Perks. These three were in the thick of the action in the final race of the weekend and in the closing stages of the race Travis got past early NG Cup leader Ian Perks and managed to pull out a 1.51 second lead and finished in fifth place overall and first in the NG Cup class.

  • Triple podium for Higgins

The weekend of the 28th-29th June saw the fourth round of the National Post Classic Grand Prix 250cc/350cc Championships held at Anglesey with Broughton Gifford’s Darrell Higgins competing on his Dennis Trollope-backed Yamaha TZ 350cc machine.
After qualifying, Darrell was fifth fastest but his first race on the Saturday saw two red flags with the second part after only five laps and Darrell crossed the line in third place. Darrell’s two races on the Sunday ran the full distance of nine laps each and he notched up another pair of third places which has saw him move up to fifth place in the 350cc Championship. Darrell said afterwards that these were his best results so far this season and was pleased that his bike kept going as racing bikes of this age can be challenging at times as they are over 40 years old.

  • Former stationery shop up for auction

The building of a former independent stationery shop, Edwards, is due to go up for auction.
Edwards Stationery, which was based at 7 Bank Street, closed last September due to a rise in costs. Now, ten months later and the building is listed for auction on 10th July at a guide price of £90,000, with the estate and lettings agent Strakers saying the space would be an ‘ideal investment.’
Former owner of Edwards, Kamlesh Patel, had been running the shop for eight years before it closed and said that although the shop survived the Covid lockdowns, rising costs following the war in Ukraine made it no longer viable. The Grade II listed building has been a stationery shop in the town since the 1980s, stocking various supplies including pens, notebooks, envelopes and art materials.
