A pop-up green space has opened in the Market Place with flower planters and a garden bench.
It’s the first part of a £10,000 scheme aiming to encourage people back into the town centre.
The scheme includes a ‘safari animal’ trail around the town centre which will comprise of eight to 10 large animal shapes covered in green artificial grass. The animals are due to arrive later this month.
“The reaction to the pop-up green space has been positive,” said a spokesperson for the town council.
“It’s due to stay in place until our Climate Fest event in mid-September or perhaps later to mid-October.”
The new temporary attractions have been made possible by a £10,000 grant allocated to Melksham by Wiltshire Council. The money has come from the government’s ‘welcome back fund’, which is designed to support the safe return of local people town centres following the Covid pandemic.
Under the fund, local authorities were given a share of £50million to spend to help support the safe return of local people to high streets and help local councils ‘build back better’ from the pandemic.
