A MELKSHAM man is set to race across Europe in a car that cost under £500 in a bid to raise money for Tommies children’s charity.
Ben Webb will be competing in the Scrumrun charity event that involves competitors purchasing a car for under £500 before travelling more than 3,000 miles across Europe. Those that take part raise money which goes towards the event’s chosen charity which this year is Tommies.
Ben will be racing with his friend Max Leaning in a Saab Aero 2.3L Turbo which has been transformed to look like a cow and has been affectionately called Gertrude.
The pair competed in the same event last year and have been inspired to give it another go after they enjoyed it so much in 2014.
This year’s event starts on Thursday 14th May when more than 100 teams will meet on board a ferry to Dunkirk. Whilst they cross the English Channel they will be given their ‘Top-Gear style’ envelope which will reveal the longitude and latitude of their destination.
Ben said, “The event last year allowed us to explore Europe and raise money for a great cause. So this year we decided to enter again because you never know where you will be travelling to, because it’s Scumrun’s 10th anniversary and because we love to help charities – and if its using something engine powered even better!
“Last year we entered on a budget with a £160 diesel Citroen which was a complete diamond as it only used four tanks of fuel and did not breakdown once. We completed 80% of the challenges but this year we are hoping to complete all the challenges and not get too lost along the way.
“Our team name is Post Totty and we have a Facebook page to keep people up-to-date with how things are going.
“We are looking to raise as much money as possible this year and we’re hoping if any of the local community or companies are interested, there is advertising space on the car. If anyone would like to sponsor us it would be much appreciated.”
