LOCAL businesses next to Melksham Railway Station are being forced to work surrounded by a bad smell due to raw sewage that has appeared by the rail tracks.
Melksham Carcare Centre and Melksham Tyre Supplies have contacted the Melksham News as huge puddles of raw sewage have appeared around the rail tracks which is just yards from both businesses.
The sewage problem has been an ongoing issue which has recently become more of an issue as the size of sewage puddles appears to be growing and with it, the smell is getting worse.
Steve Kerslake owner of Melksham Carcentre said, “It has been a problem for some time now and nobody wants to take ownership of the problem. Wessex Water and Network Rail both say it is each other’s responsibility but in the meantime we are left to work surrounded by the awful smell.
“Some days we have turned up and it has a white covering and is different in size. There is a dead rabbit in between the sewage puddles so I am guessing it could be toxic.”
James Love from Melksham Tyre Supplies says they have also suffered as a result of the raw sewage. He said, “It has not been pleasant being right next to it and it would be good to see something done.”
George Keast from Wessex Water said, “It is heavily diluted foul water and waste from a local stonemasonry that has seeped onto the railway line from a sewer. As a precaution, we immediately contacted Network Rail, which confirmed that it didn’t pose a risk to trains or affect services. We are liaising with Network Rail to arrange a suitable time when it will be safe to repair the sewer and least disruptive to rail passengers.”
