THE weekend of Sat/Sun 2nd and 3rd Sept brought the club finals at Spencers Bowls Club, with ten games to complete over the weekend.
Saturday started with a lovely day for bowls starting at 11am with the ladies and men’s 4 wood finals. The ladies game, contested between Janet Richards and Delia Godwin, two of our senior lady bowlers, age makes no difference even in your forties(?) ended 21-12 to Delia.
The men’s final between Matt Edwards and Brian Roper was a keenly-contested game with new dad, Matt, and a more mature Brian, having a great contest with Matt running out the winner 21-15.
At one o’clock we saw the start of the ladies handicap which featured club captain, Mo Laws, against another club stalwart, Carol Davies; another game contested in lovely sunny weather with Carol Running out the winner 21-8.
Three o’clock saw the final two games of the day; men’s pairs with brothers- in-law Matt Edwards and Reece Williams facing each other with partners Brian Copland and Gwilym Watson. The result was Matt and Brian running out winners 21-19 in a very keenly contested game. A very well done Reece in your first season playing bowls, Hope we see a lot more of you and Matt representing Spencer in the future.
Three o’clock also saw the last ladies game of the day, with the ladies 2 wood final contested between Shelia Bird and Delia Godwin contesting her second final of the day, in the fine sunshine, with Shelia running out the winner 16-11 after a long day for Delia, who had another game the next day. Well done ladies on a fine performance.
Come Sunday and a complete change in the weather conditions – gone was the warm sunshine. Now it was rain on and off all day, really awkward to play in.
The men’s final of the four wood handicap between Matt Edwards and Gwilym Watson saw them playing each other again. Soaked through and uncomfortable with the rain coming down, Gwilym run out 21-16 winner.
The ladies on the next rink were having as much fun as the men in the rain. Their pairs game with Julie Crew and Dalia Godwin again, playing Carol Davies and Eileen Hawker in a thrilling three-hour marathon, ended 21-16 to Carol and Eileen.
Come one o’clock saw the start of the old and bold with two of our senior players, Derek White and Brian Bird, enjoying the rain. This one finished 16-8 to Brian.
The final two games started an hour earlier at 2pm due to the weather conditions. The men’s two woods between Harold Thompson and Gwilym Watson finished in quick time, 18-10 to Gwilym on 19 ends.
Then another marathon final game of the weekend in miserable conditions. The mixed pairs between Mo Price and Pete Byfield playing Janet Richards and past county President Pete Sanders was another marathon game, with Janet and Pete beating Mo and Pete 24-12.
As always at these events, it takes a bit of organising and it’s with thanks to big Dave Laws and his good lady Maureen and the other club members that arranged this through the season – many thanks guys.
