STAFF at the local Wetherspoon pub, The Bear, are taking part in a 24k cycle ride to raise money and awareness for Clic Sargent – a charity that supports children and young people with cancer.
Starting at the pub on Bath Road, at 11am on Sunday 28th June, the route will take them through the lovely Wiltshire countryside and villages including Bradford-on-Avon and Staverton.
Lianne Vokes who is taking part in the cycle said, “To date, Wetherspoon as a company has raised over 10million for the charity, and ‘Team Bear’ in Melksham are doing our part and pushing ourselves to raise a little more.
“In the past we have held several fundraising raffles, held a quiz night and attended ‘kick for clic’, which is a company wide 5-a-side football tournament between all Wetherspoon pubs.”
The team is a mix of all ages and abilities. Gayle Clark is a senior member of staff at The Bear and will be the team’s captain for the day.
Lianne said, “Gayle has lived in Melksham her whole life, and has worked in the pub since the day it opened. She has become a well known face within the community. She is loved by the customers and greets everyone with a friendly smile.”
Gayle said, “This is an opportunity for us to do our bit for the children’s charity. We need all the support from Melksham to raise our target of £500.”
Lisa continued, “The local ‘regulars’ have donated in excess of £100 from just two days of spreading the word. The team has been slightly overwhelmed by people’s generosity. All team members are currently in training and are super excited to get involved.”
If you’d like to donate, staff are taking sponsorship within the pub itself and you can also donate on justgiving – www.justgiving.com/teambear6689
