WOMEN from across Melksham and nearby towns and villages, came together last week to celebrate ‘International Women’s Day’.
Organised by the West Wiltshire Multi Faith Forum (WWMFF), the event at the Guides headquarters in King George V park, involved a belly dancing workshop; a talk from mayor of Melksham, cllr Adrienne Westbrook; and time for attendees to share stories about their favourite women.
One of the organisers, Farzana Saker said, “This event was very important for three reasons. It gave an opportunity for women from our English classes to prepare and focus on the topic of ‘International Women’s Day’. It brought together women from many different backgrounds, who all do amazing work in the community, helping to create a real sense of belonging in the community. And thirdly, it was an opportunity for us to engage with local bodies such as the council, police and care homes. Two local business Refa Tandoori and the Kebab House sponsored the event. WWMFF is very grateful for their support.”
Cllr Westbrook, who spoke at the event said, “I was really excited to give my talk about women for the ‘International Women’s Day’ event. I strongly believe that more women should be involved in politics. Women make up 51% of the population and they should have more say in decision making.”
