NEW speed indicator devices are to be purchased by the town council.
The new electronic signs, which encourage drivers to slow down when driving over the speed limit, will replace those bought last year by the council that were found to have faulty batteries.
The council has engaged its solicitors to obtain a refund from the manufacturers – but instead of waiting for the refund, councillors agreed at a meeting last week to purchase new devices from a different manufacturer.
Seven speeding “hot spots” have been earmarked to have the speed indicator devices installed – Spa Road, King Street, Semington Road, Snowberry Lane, Sandridge Road, Lowbourne; the seventh device will be rotated between the Kenilworth Gardens estate, Coronation Road and Ruskin Avenue – which are 20mph zones.
The town council selected these areas in response to concern from residents about speeding in the town.
The devices will record the number of vehicles passing through the area and their speeds, allowing the town council to collect evidence about the effectiveness of the scheme, and also help advise the police about where and when speeding enforcement may be most effective.
