JANUARY is traditionally a time to make resolutions for the year ahead, but instead of resolving to change careers or get fit, local groups and charities are asking the people of Melksham to think of others and see if they could offer a helping hand.
There are plenty of volunteering roles available in the town to suit different skills and interests and the benefits of volunteering won’t only enrich your life but also help the Melksham community.
By volunteering for a charity or community group, you can improve your wellbeing, confidence and gain invaluable work experience whilst developing new skills. Melksham is also renowned for its sense of community spirit and volunteers are an essential part of this.
Some of the organisations seeking volunteers include Melksham and District Link; Wiltshire Air Ambulance; Wilts & Berks Canal Trust; Bowerhill Baby and Toddler Group; and Shine Friendship Group, plus many more.
Whether you have some free time to help transport people to medical appointments, give a helping hand at one of the town’s popular annual events, support local groups to fundraise, or answer the phone calls from the most vulnerable and isolated in Melksham, there are plenty of ways to give back to your neighbourhood and show just how strong the community spirit is in the town.
Councillor Saffi Rabey started volunteering in Melksham in the Covid-19 pandemic collecting prescriptions and shopping for isolated and vulnerable people during the lockdowns, with Melksham Community Support Scheme.
She said, “I wouldn’t be a councillor now if it wasn’t for the volunteering I did. My involvement with Melksham has totally changed because of it. I would encourage anyone of any age to get involved in your community and who knows what journey it will take you on.”
