WORK is progressing to transform Melksham Railway Station into an “attractive gateway” for the town – but the team behind the work need your help!
TransWilts is looking for volunteers to help with the installation of their kitchen, painters and decorators, and café operators for when the ‘Melksham Hub’ is officially opened.
The community interest company (CIC) is also requesting help to kit out the café’s kitchen.
TransWilts say, “Would you like to join us and volunteer at the café? Perhaps help with gardening? Maybe get involved in other projects at the new Melksham Hub? This is a great opportunity to give something back to the community and meet new friends.
“We will happily supply health and safety training for these individuals.
“We are also requesting help to kit out the kitchen as well, as our budget is very low so if there are any local companies that would like to donate, that would be much appreciated.”
It is hoped that the café’s kitchen will be finished around November/December time. About the shifts available for café volunteers, TransWilts said, “We want to catch the first train traffic (approx. 7am). Initially we will be open until about 3-4pm each day so need to stagger the shifts and have volunteers to cover all.”
Planned improvements for facilities at the station, include a café, piazza, toilet, and an extension to the parking areas. Recent progress at the station includes the installation of new CCTV and a platform destination indicator. An electric vehicle charging point has also been installed and is awaiting commissioning.
At last week’s Melksham Area Board, Paul Johnson from TransWilts revealed that they are in talks with a cycle company to introduce a cycle hire service, that would cost £2.50 an hour or £15 for the day.
