Women’s cricket in Melksham has flourished over the past two years, with 30 women now playing regularly in the Melksham Mavericks squad.
The team launched in 2023 with just nine women. Two years on, the squad has grown to 30 members aged between 11 and 60, who meet weekly at Melksham Cricket Club to train, play and compete in the softball league and various festivals.
Softball is an inclusive form of cricket, designed to be fun and accessible, using a smaller pitch and simpler scoring rules.
“The women’s club really is for everyone,” explained vice-captain Tanya Lee. “The Mavericks played their first season in the softball paid league. We came sixth but had a couple of good wins and some very close matches. Some of the Mavericks have even stepped up to the senior team and played hardball cricket.
“Over the last two years, highlights have been watching the team grow to where we are today, with the incredible support from the Melksham Cricket Club committee. The biggest thanks go to our coaches, Paul Merrett and Andy Footner. They both still play for Melksham Cricket Club but give up their weekends and, now with the summer season here, weekday evenings to support us, whether it’s for training or matches.”
Growing opportunities and support for women to play cricket have contributed to the increased interest.
“As the squad grows, we have the challenge of team selection – but it’s a great challenge to have,” said Tanya.
“Women’s cricket is on the rise nationally, with more competitions, teams and opportunities arising, especially following the success of the England women’s cricket team.”
Melksham Mavericks recently hosted a softball festival at Melksham Cricket Club, with over 60 women and girls from across Wiltshire attending.
The festival gives participants the chance to play a series of games organised by Wiltshire Cricket, with a focus on having fun and practising skills learnt during training.
“Initiatives like the women’s softball festivals have shown that cricket can be for anyone,” said Tanya. “Younger girls can also get involved through the youth section of the cricket club. The main benefits the Mavericks have found are physical activity, teamwork and, most importantly, the social side. It helps to develop skills like communication, strategy and leadership. We’re also a very social bunch and have enjoyed great times together, including karaoke and a Motown night.”
Melksham Cricket Club is one of several clubs in the town – including the football and rugby clubs – where women’s teams have flourished.
Most recently, the Mavericks secured a shirt sponsor from local business Plumbstop Melksham.
Melksham Mavericks train at Melksham Cricket Club, near Melksham House, on Tuesdays at 6.15pm. More information can be found on their social media pages.
