A LOCAL charity is asking young people to share their experiences of using health and social care services in the area, in the hope of helping providers to improve services in the future.
Ten ‘Young Listeners’ have been trained by Healthwatch Wiltshire – based on Hampton Park West – and Community First, and will be speaking to young people throughout the year to hear about their experiences with health and social care.
Lucie Woodruff, Healthwatch Wiltshire’s volunteer and engagement manager said, “The group of dedicated Young Listeners are keen to listen to as many young people as possible. They are enthusiastic that by being part of this project they can be involved in influencing positive changes to health and social care services for young people.
“A child or young person’s early life experiences have a crucial impact on their adult health and life chances. We know that young people often feel that their views are not listened to and this is something we want to work to change.
“By recruiting this fantastic team of eager listeners we are able to give other children and young people the opportunity to share their own experiences with their peers.”
The project aims to hear the experiences of children and young people aged between five and 18 who use health and social care services. It will have a particular focus on young carers, emotional wellbeing and mental health, and children and young people with special educational needs.
One of the Young Listeners said, “As young people we didn’t feel that we had any authority when talking to a doctor, but we can help give other children and young people that power.”
At the end of the year the Young Listeners will produce and star in a short film. This will be shared with commissioners and the general public to influence service changes in the future.
