A GROUP of local men will be cycling from Land’s End to John O’Groats next month and are hoping to raise £3,000 for charity.
Bowerhill man Neil Young, along with four friends, will take on the mammoth challenge, which will see them cycle approximately 1,000 miles over the course of ten days.
Neil said, “Training is going well and we’re really looking forward to the ride – it’s an ambition that we all shared and, as keen cyclists, it’s something that has been on our bucket lists for a while.”
Neil will be joined by local men Keith Jefferies, and Mark and Steve Gerrish – who will all be raising money for the Great Western Air Ambulance – and Dan Aldridge, who will donate his sponsorship to Cancer Research UK.
To complete the ride in time, the team will have to average 100 miles a day.
“This is going to be the most difficult challenge we will do in our lives,” Neil continued. “But none of us have challenged ourselves with something so worthwhile before.
“We train together on Sundays and gradually increase the mileage each time, as well as doing our own training during the week.
“We will be keeping to the west side of the country as we make our way up to John O’Groats, and will be staying in travel lodges and hostels overnight.
“We’d like to say a big thanks to Kate Charlesworth, who will kindly be driving with us to carry food and supplies, and to Andy Cadwallader, who has helped us so much with planning the route and preparing for the trip.
“Fundraising has taken off and we would love more support in raising £3,000 for two great causes. Four of us chose to support the air ambulance because we know it’s a valuable service that needs as much help as possible, and we see in the headlines every week the great work they do saving lives. Dan will be raising money for Cancer Research which is a charity close to his heart.”
