Junior golfer is best in the South West

Young golfer, Laura Curtis, recently tied second place at the Abraham Trophy in Norfolk.

Laura who is 11 years old and lives in Shaw, finished on 76, 2 over par and just one shot off the winner in a closely contested 18 hole final at The Royal Cromer Golf Club.

The competition, run by England golf, aims to find the most improved under 18 girl golfer in England. Laura was one of the eight regional winners receiving a silver salver for the best in the South West region, the first ever girl from Wiltshire to win.  She has had a 34 shot handicap reduction in the last year.

Laura said, “I was really excited to qualify as the winner of the most improved girl in the west and was determined to do well.

“The weather conditions were tough with very strong winds and rain. I was disappointed with my round when I first finished as I thought I could’ve played better, but once I had seen all the other scores, I realised how tough the championship course had played and that I was joint second and only one shot off winning.”

Laura has been playing golf for two and half years. She started playing in the junior Saturday class at Whitley Golf Club, but now trains at Cumberwell Park. She said, “ I like to play golf as it is an escape from bad thoughts and can be a very social sport.

“My whole family back me 100% and take me all over the country to compete. They spend hours walking around golf courses and waiting while I’m training.

“I now plan to take a short summer break and then to train hard through the winter to improve my game even further and look forward to another competitive season.”
