THE people of Melksham weren’t going to let the downpours dampen the party spirit as hundreds lined the streets to watch the Melksham Carnival procession.
The weather forecasters didn’t have good news for the Carnival committee as heavy rain was predicted for the day; however despite this, people came out armed with raincoats and umbrellas to enjoy all the fun in King George V Park for the family fun day and then filled the high street to watch as the procession of nearly 30 floats and groups paraded through the town centre.
Carnival committee member Christine York said, “Considering the heavy showers during the day and the heavens opening at 6pm when the procession left Cooper Tires car park, the committee is very pleased with the way the day went.
“We had a good turnout at the fun day, with lots of traders still pitching up. The first ever dog show was well attended, as was the bonniest baby competition. As for the procession, we can only say a huge thank you to all the floats and walkers that still participated and made the procession the success it was – to have five large floats and 30 entries this year was amazing.
“The people of Melksham also deserve a big thank you for lining the streets to cheer them on. With all the effort put into these floats, walking groups and dancers, it was great for them to know it wasn’t in vain. We even had enquiries about joining us next year.
“Because of the weather we did find the donation buckets were a little lighter. So if you usually donate but were unable to do so this year and would still like to contribute for next year’s carnival we still have a collection tin in the shop (Andy York in the Littlebrook Centre) that you can put any pennies or pounds in that you would have put in the buckets.”
This year’s winners were as follows; The Mayor’s Choice – National Autistic Society. Best Float – Heddington Amateur Dramatic Society. Best Walking Group – Julie in Bloom. Best Performance Group – In 2 Dance. Carnival Queen’s Choice – Avon Protection Team, Gasgasgas. Best Individual Overall – McKenzie Morris from Enigma Twirlers. Best School – Aloeric School. The Bonniest Baby was – Austin Newman.
The carnival committee is asking people to give their feedback and suggestions on both the family fun day and carnival procession. Please send them a message on Facebook or complete the feedback form on the back of the carnival programme or write to Melksham News.
