CURVES in Avonside, Melksham, is fundraising for Stepping Stones special needs nursery following a story about its funding being cut in the last issue of the Melksham News.
The women-only gym has decided to run a series of fundraising events throughout March after one of their members was pictured on the front page of the last issue campaigning to raise money for Stepping Stones.
The nursery in Trowbridge serves west Wiltshire and is used by many children from Melksham with special needs. However the centre, which requires £50,000 a year to run on top of money already provided by the local authority, has been told that £10,000 of funding it usually receives from Wiltshire Council has been removed after central government withdrew its ‘aiming high for disabled children’ grants.
Curves started off their month of fundraising events with a pancake tossing event last week, and a coffee morning, circuit, raffle and bring and buy sale also happening in March.
Manager Sue Armstrong said, “After we saw the story in the Melksham News which one of our members, Julie, is part of, we decided we had to do something so decided to dedicate our fundraising efforts in March to them.
“The pancake day has already been a success with about £20 raised and we hope that much more can be raised between now and the end of the month.
“We don’t have a fundraising target, we just hope to raise as much as we can and hope people come along to the events and make the most of the service charge being waived for new members in exchange for the donation to the cause.”
