Avon Bowls Club, based in the grounds of Melksham House, ended a highly successful season in September 2015 which included the retention of the Pontyclun Cup played annually against a team from South Wales, and the presentation to Mike Hudd, the first winner of the cup dedicated to the memory of Terry Gregory who sadly died last year.
Throughout the winter various events were held at the club including a wonderful Christmas lunch, a highly entertaining celebration of Burn’s Night, and a very enjoyable Quiz Evening, all of which attracted over 50 members and guests.
Now the sun is shining, and the 2016 bowls season is about to start what it is hoped will be a long, warm summer, with the first match due to be played on Saturday 16th April at 2.30pm, in the words of the new Lady Captain, Sue Renshaw, ‘Roll on the day!’
However, all clubs need to engender new members, so Avon Bowls are keen to encourage the people of Melksham – both the young and the not so young – to come along and learn how to play what is a fascinating game, well to most of us, anyway!
“To this end, supported by the Bowls Development Alliance, the club is hosting two Open Days/Evenings, the first on Tuesday 19th April, and the second on Tuesday 17th May, both from 2.00pm until 9.00pm which are specifically aimed at total beginners.
And of course, every Tuesday throughout the season from 6.00pm until 9.00pm there will be the weekly ‘Roll Up’ evenings – very popular with both experienced players and those new to the game – and the first of these will be held on 26th April.
The only requirement for prospective players is to bring some flat-soled shoes, and the club will do the rest including the provision of qualified and friendly tutors to help you.
Throughout the evening and continuing the social theme, refreshments can be obtained in the Club House which will give you the opportunity of meeting our friendly members. So come along on any of the dates listed, and give it a go. You may actually find yourself enjoying the occasion.
From the beginning of April there will be a window display at the Tourist Office in Church Street and meanwhile further information can be obtained from the publicity section of the club on 01225 700 782.
Finally, congratulations to all the successful players from last season who won the club honours, as well as the various teams who played so well. Keep up the good work!
