A Melksham woman has received a surprise £100 box of goodies from a farm shop, a reward for helping her neighbours during the coronavirus crisis.
Deirdre Rodgers was nominated for the giveaway from the Farm Shop at OHH Pub Company by Sue and Bob Mortimer. Sue is well known in Melksham for running the Community Meals Scheme.
“We nominated our neighbour Deirdre Rodgers who has made a huge difference to our lives since we have been in lockdown,” said Sue.
“I email her my shopping list on Tuesdays and Thursdays and she does our shopping for us. My husband is over 70 and I had Hodgkin Lymphoma (cancer of the white blood cells) about 10 years ago and although I feel fit and healthy, Deirdre pointed out to me that my immunity is not as good as it should be and offered to do the shopping for us.
“She calls me on my mobile whilst in the supermarket suggesting alternatives when shelves are bare for things on my list. If she is unable to get alternatives she has given me things from her own cupboard such as eggs, flour and even shared a jar of marmite with me.
“I am not the only one she shops for as I know she shops for three others as well and helps in other ways also.
“She does printing for me so I can keep in touch with my users of Melksham Community Meals, a service that is on hold during this pandemic.
“Her and her husband would do anything for us that would make our lives easier through these difficult times. She really is our hero. The Farmshop asked for nominations to receive a £100 of goodies and it’s great that Deidre was one of the people chosen. It’s well deserved.”
Sue also paid tribute to the work of the Melksham Community Response Team.
“Melksham Community Response Team has over 400 volunteers supporting Melksham Residents and I applaud them all. I also applaud the 450 residents plus who have been sensible enough and brave enough to accept the team’s help to help keep them and everyone else safe during this terrible pandemic.
“Please will all you lovely volunteers as you go about you brilliant work bear in mind it is harder to receive help than it is to give it! Thank you team.”
