TOWN travelled to the Isle of Wight on Saturday 5th August to play in the FA Cup extra preliminary round, reports club chairman Darren Perrin.
The Town took over 40 supporters to the island and what a day it turned out to be. With a rough crossing and torrential rain and conditions very windy, we were wary of becoming a victim to a cup upset.
However, the team produced a fantastic performance and deservedly ran out 4-2 winners thanks to goals from Gary Higdon (on his return to the club), Sam Hendy, Ben Brooks and Alex Henshall.
Town now travel to AFC Stoneham in Eastleigh, Southampton this coming Saturday 19th August looking to progress to the first round qualifying.
Last Saturday, Town started their League campaign with a visit to Paulton Rovers. Melksham got off to a great start with a goal after three minutes from Alex Henshall.
Although, no-where near our best, Town produced a gutsy, resilience performance to return to Wiltshire with all three points courtesy of that early goal.
It must be said with nearly 70 to 80 supporters attending the game, the players and management team have been blown away with the vocal support the team have received and hopefully long may it continue, either at Stoneham on Saturday or against Exmouth at home on Saturday 26th August. Kick-off is at 3pm and then onto Westbury on the Bank Holiday Monday, kick-off 3pm.
The Reserves and Development team both suffered disappointing results on the first day of the League season losing 4-1 and 3-1 respectively but the Vets started their season off with a 7-0 win over Amesbury.
Please get the word out in Melksham to family and friends that the Oakfield Stadium is the place to be and get behind your local football team in the town.
