PLANS to install new eco-toilets in King George V playing field have been delayed until mid-August.
It was hoped by Melksham Town Council that two environmentally friendly and sustainable eco-modular toilet pods, which are thought to be the first of their kind in the UK, would be installed and ready for use this month.
An ‘internal reorganisation’ at the manufacturers of the toilets, Healthmatic, has been blamed for the delay.
Initial groundworks to install the cubicles – which use new technology that requires no electricity or water, instead breaking down waste in a vault using worms – next to the park’s pavilion building, have been completed.
At a meeting last week of the town council’s asset management and amenities committee, the council’s head of operations, Hugh Davies, explained that the manufacturers were now offering a 15% discount, reducing the price of the toilets to £33,295, which he described as ‘better value’.
“It’s always good when you come back with a lower cost!” said cllr Jon Hubbard.
According to Melksham Town Council and manufacturers Healthmatic, the eco-toilets, which can be found in France, have yet to be installed anywhere in the UK.
