Manager at Tops Hair Salon, Vicky Stevens, was recently named a finalist at a national hairdressing competition, narrowly missing the top spot.
Vicky entered the National Hairdressers’ Federation ‘Photographic Stylist of the Year’ competition and with over 200 entries, Vicky came in the top four.
The final took place at the Heritage Motor Centre in Warwickshire on Sunday 15th November and although she didn’t win, Vicky had a great day. She said, “I really enjoyed the whole experience and even though I’m a bit disappointed I didn’t win, coming in the top four is still brilliant and I’m proud of that.
“It was great to walk around and see other people’s work because there were other competitions going on at the same time.”
Tops also featured in hairdressing magazine Salon Focus, in an article about family-run businesses. Vicky said, “It was a great day, we had a photographer take photos of us which was good fun although mum hates having her photo taken!”
Tops have also launched a community volunteering scheme having been inspired by a film.
Alex Stevens, office manager said, “I went to the cinema with my friends to watch The Intern, a film about a retired man who needed something to do. Since retiring, he’d travelled the world, bought plants, learned to cook and even tried learning Mandarin, but he was missing something else in his life.
“He went to the shops and saw an ad on a noticeboard advertising a position for seniors to intern at a clothing company. He applied, got the job and was an absolute hit. So, it gave me the idea that perhaps we could do something similar in Melksham. I thought that we could do our bit to help those in our community who need something to do and who need to be around people.
“So if you have recently retired or perhaps you’re unemployed and need a reference and a entry on your CV, why not volunteer with us for a few hours a week.”
